We now have TWO not one but TWO working BrickPi's! Sam nabbed one from the University but was missing a few things, like all the cables and power and setup tools and instructions. Eoin's dad purchased a BrickPi Starter Kit that arrived in time for Christmas, then he dropped it at my house earlier this week. I've now got both bricks up to date, software installed, and communicating with my laptop. Next steps:
Find a way to make code sharing easy. Still learning the best way to transfer and execute python to the Brick. Currently I'm just running an imager through a browser and using the built-in python shell on the Pi itself. What I'd like best is a central hub (i.e. Git) where we can share code, but then an easy system to get remote code onto the Brick without having to pull out the SD and reboot for every update. For the record, none of these things are in my wheelhouse so I'm noobing it here.
Build and test a basic robot. I'm talking two wheels and a castor to start so we can mess with locomotion.
Get one brick back to Eoin's Dad with a couple of spare Mindstorm motors so we can theoretically have two testable robots going at once.
See if we can make the above process easy enough to allow William and Ben to remote code. Would love it if we could set up a webcam and get you working in pairs - one with the robot, one doing code, solving a problem together.
Anyway, big thumbs up today, folks! We can make an actual robot now!
