As you may recall from some of the previous blog posts (Ok Google and Spaghettification), we've been working on a method to use a homemade Google AIY kit to give voice commands to Stev3 for the Up the Garden Path challenge. Today we attempted to film our submission video.
Firstly, it took a while for commands to actually run, usually a 1-2 second delay. So we lost a lot of time in the gaps between shouting, waiting, watching it drive and stop, then making a choice on the next command.
Secondly, it was quite inconsistent, often requiring me to shout "Spaghetti" at the damn thing 4 or 5 times. Maybe it was down to how echoey the building was, or maybe we had bad WiFi, or maybe it just didn't like my voice.
Thirdly... Google has a limit on the number of times developers can access Google Assistant - 500 requests in 24 hours, then it just doesn't answer you anymore. So, while we all took a Subway Cookie Break, Kevin re-coded the socket server code to run on Cloudspeech instead of Assistant - both Google services but different, no idea what makes them different.
It TECHNICALLY worked, however it was not what we'd consider a "successful" run. It was barely under the allowed time, coming in at 4 minutes and 42 seconds. We could submit this, but we figure we'll work on it and try again in the future.
