VIDEO: FLL - Go Go Gadget Arm!

Updated: Feb 16

We love loopholes, especially loopholes in robotic competitions.

In First Lego League, there's a heap of points available for depositing cargo in circles around the arena. The way they've worded the point system is a bit confusing, but it says something like this:

  • For every cargo container delivered to a circle, 10 points

  • For every circle with a cargo container inside, 10 points

Sounds like the same thing, but it isn't. it works like this:

  • If you deliver a container to a circle, you get 10 for the container and 10 for the circle = 20 points

  • If you deliver 5 containers to 1 circle, you get 5x10 for the containers and 10 for the circle = 60 points.

  • If you deliver 5 containers to 5 circles (one per circle), you get 5x10 for the containers and 5x10 for the circles = 100 points.

(They probably put this rule in place because the last time we competed in FLL we stacked 8 boxes in one circle and got about 240 points in 10 seconds for it).

So... now that we need to get as many single boxes in as many individual circles as we can, we built this ridicu- er, ingenious workaround.

Note from the future: our loophole was thwarted by a 30cm height limit. :-(((((((
